The insulation industry is witnessing a dynamic shift in technology and manufacturing processes as it inches towards an era with an ever-increasing focus on sustainable construction and energy efficiency. The focus for insulated roof and wall panel manufacturers is on optimising thermal performance and durability, as well as developing quicker and simpler installation processes requiring less manual labour.

Jonathan Wormwell, general manager, Kingspan Insulated Panels, said, “Among the range of insulation options available in Australia, Kingspan polyisocyanurate (PIR) panels stand out for their superior thermal efficiency and longevity, setting the standard for insulation both globally and locally.”

PIR panels use insulation material consisting of a thermosetting plastic foam core (known for its excellent thermal insulation properties) and sandwiched metal sheets. The foam core is the result of a reaction between a polymeric isocyanate and a polyol blend, creating a closed-cell foam structure that enhances the insulation properties by reducing air movement and heat conduction. This creates a high-performing insulation product that is quick and easy to install, and provides continuous insulation with no thermal bridging issues or condensation risk. PIR panels are lightweight and rigid, offering high thermal resistance, effectively reducing heat transfer and enhancing energy efficiency within structures. They are commonly used in the walls and roofs of commercial buildings to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature year-round, futureproofing buildings for increased thermal and air pressure testing.

“PIR panels offer a superior single component wall and roof solution compared to conventional built-up systems. They are quicker to install, require less manual labour and are designed to meet thermal building regulations compliance,” Wormwell said.

In addition to their thermal efficiency, PIR panels boast excellent fire performance, making them a safe and reliable choice for commercial applications. Their fire-resistant properties provide an added layer of protection. This combination of thermal efficiency and fire safety positions PIR panels as a cornerstone of modern building construction.

PIR panels also demonstrate excellent moisture resistance. This works to safeguard the building envelope from water infiltration and moisture-related issues such as mould growth, rot, and eventual deterioration, which is particularly important in high-humidity environments or regions prone to heavy rainfall. This efficient thermal performance contributes to maintaining comfortable indoor environments, reducing the reliance on heating and cooling systems.

Organisations should look for PIR products that have the Ecospecifier Global GreenTag certified to GreenRate Level A and meet International Organization for Standardization (ISO) life cycle assessment (LCA) standards. The ISO LCA reports the significant environmental impacts associated with the product, including the impact on water, air, land, and climate change.

The longevity of PIR panels ensures prolonged operational efficiency, minimising the need for frequent replacements and associated material waste. Additionally, the superior thermal performance of PIR panels leads to reduced energy consumption, making them an integral part of achieving more sustainable and energy-efficient buildings.

“In a market saturated with different types of insulation, PIR panels outperform traditional options on multiple fronts. Utilising PIR panels represents a pivotal step towards a more sustainable and resilient built environment. By choosing PIR panels, customers gain access to exceptional thermal performance and long-lasting durability, benefitting from a wide range of insulation options tailored to meet the diverse needs of modern construction,” Wormwell concluded.
