Creating a modern perforated bridge for Unanderra

The upgrade improves accessibility at the historic transport hub that opened in 1887 to provide a better experience for public transport customers by delivering modern, safe and accessible infrastructure.

As well as improving safety and access, the beautiful architectural design involved consultation with Coomaditchie United Aboriginal Corporation and local designers to weave Aboriginal narratives and themes throughout the station to provide an enriching experience for commuters, connecting them to the natural environment; as such, the intricate perforation pattern for the bridge, canopies, and stairs was carefully considered and designed.

Working with project fabricators Alfabs Engineering Group and the project’s construction company Degnan, we customised a classic round design to meet the project’s distinctive aesthetics and goals.

We punched over 300 aluminium sheets with 20mm holes in 30 per cent and 40 per cent open area, which allows commuters to enjoy the scenic views, maximises natural light, and provides weather protection.

The perforated panels were folded to meet project engineering specifications and finished in Dulux Duratec Monument Grey to complement the colour scheme and additional facilities.
