Hygiene and infection control drive selection of automatic doors at Wonthaggi Hospital

The Stage One expansion and upgrade of Wonthaggi Hospital was opened in February 2023 and delivered 32 new inpatient beds and a new emergency department with 18 additional treatment spaces for the residents of Bass Coast Shire in Regional Victoria.
Construction commenced during the peak of the COVID-19 health crisis, prompting a concerted effort to enhance pandemic readiness across key hospital areas such as the emergency department, operating theatres and inpatient ward. To address this design imperative, Lyons, the project architects enlisted the expertise of ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems to collaborate on the design of all automatic sliding and swing door entrances throughout the hospital, with a primary focus on touchless door controls and infection control measures. The installation encompassed a total of 105 automatic doors, significantly contributing to the hospital’s functionality and safety.
From the main entrance and emergency department featuring SL500 automatic sliding doors with ADS framed door panels to the operating theatres and inpatient ward where SL521 automatic telescopic sliding doors facilitate seamless movement of hospital beds and equipment, ASSA ABLOY’s tailored solutions have left an indelible mark on this pivotal project.
Notably, ASSA ABLOY’s custom-designed and tested SL Hygienic door framing system has significantly enhanced air leakage performance, ensuring optimal hygiene standards are maintained throughout the facility.
